The island of Ireland is 300 miles/450 km long and 190 miles/300 km wide and covers approximately 32,600 sq. miles/84,500 sq. km. Ireland is divided into four provinces - Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught and into 32 counties. The Republic of Ireland consists of 26 counties and Northern Ireland consists of 6 counties. Ireland is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and in accordance with daylight saving, clocks are put forward one hour mid-March and back one hour at the end of October. During summer it stays light until as late as 11.00pm but by mid-December it can be dark by 4.00pm. The Republic of Ireland is a country waiting to be discovered. The island lies in the north Atlantic Ocean and is separated from Britain by the Irish Sea to the east - Scotland is just 20 miles away at one point. Ireland has a temperate climate, due to mild southwesterly winds and the Gulf Stream. Summers are warm, while temperatures during winter are much cooler. Spring and autumn in Ireland are very mild and rain falls all year. For this reason, you'll need to take lightweights during summer with warmer medium weights for the winter, while rainwear is a necessity throughout the year. In spite of its size, Ireland has plenty of things to do - play a round of golf on one of its world-renowned courses, fish in its plentiful waters or walk the hills and mountains, among hundreds of different activities you'll find available to you. Ireland also offers a fascinating range of accommodation - experience the Irish royal treatment in an old castle, or receive the warm family welcome in an Irish guesthouse or B&B. Perhaps you wish to lavish in a luxurious hotel, or escape to your own Irish cottage? Wherever you want to stay, and whatever your budget, you will find it there. |
