Description
If
any spa can lay claim to being a work of art, it's the Golden Door.
Created 39 years ago, the Door's current 377-acre site was selected for
its perfect year-round climate and undisturbed natural beauty; it embodies
the dream and vision of its founder, Deborah Szekely. The spa replicates a
Japanese Honjin inn, with its centuries-old tradition of thoughtful care
and renewal for the traveler. Formal Japanese gardens, a natural
meandering brook, gentle splashing waterfalls, and ponds of darting fish
are part of the tranquil setting she created. Fresh flowers,
museum-quality art, and antiques decorate every room. Occupancy is limited
to 40 guests.
At the Golden Door each guest's personal level of fitness and range of
motion are assessed so that a customized one-on-one training program can
be implemented, including a personalized take-home version. A continuous
blend of movement, massage, yoga, and other therapies are designed to
eliminate tension and intensify awareness of the mind and body
interdependence.
A 300-year-old temple bell summons guests to meals. The food is
celebrated haute spa cuisine made with produce picked daily in the Door's
own organic orchards. Exquisite beauty treatments, massages in one's own
room, and before-bedtime mini-massages wrap each guest in a continual
cocoon of contentment at the Door. For most of the year the Golden Door
offers its week long program exclusively for women, but there are special
men's and coed weeks.
A
jewel-encrusted entrance gate flanked by
camellias, fuchsia, and other blossoms leads you
through courtyards of ornamental gardens. There
are meditative sand gardens and fountains. Rare
antique stone lanterns-- part of a million dollar
art and antique collection are displayed
throughout the grounds. The facilities include
three guest lounges, a dining room, kitchen,
indoor/outdoor exercise studios and the Dragon
Tree Gym with the latest in Cybex equipment and a
Beauty Court. There are two swimming pools, two
tennis courts and a private hillside for hiking.
The bathhouse is spacious and contains a steam
room, sauna, showers, and a fan-shaped therapy
pool and sequestered rooms for body scrubs and
herbal wraps. Because the Golden Door is convinced
of the efficacy of an incremental spa program of
increasing intensity, all guests arrive on Sunday
for a seven-day stay. Among other specialists a
full-time nutritionist gives advice and
recommendations.

Your Week at
Golden Door
...sparkling
fresh air, nature at her very best, and — most important — the
camaraderie of new friends, our greatest gift of all. Awaiting you
is a staff of Fitness Specialists whose skill and expertise make
possible a wide array of classes and activities. The beauty staff
will add their magic to bring renewal and relaxation to each day. Mornings
are filled with movement of high intensity balanced by either a
massage or beauty treatment. Activities resume after lunch with a
blend of fitness, meditative and inner-person sessions. The ancient
arts of Meditation, Yoga, T'ai Chi and Qi Gong have always been an
integral part of the program. Another ancient tradition has been
revived in our labyrinth. Evenings are for simple pleasures. Hors
d'oeuvres in the lounge before dinner — time for making new
friends and re-living the day. Afterwards, the only decision: the
evening speaker, a movie, or perhaps the hot whirlpool tub and a
mini-massage before bed.
Ever
changing, ever creative, each member of our fitness staff delights
in the challenge of intriguing and surprising our guests. You'll
enjoy their inventive approaches that bring more movement, more fun,
and more laughter into each
class. The interviewer will assist you in selecting activities
appropriate to your skills and needs. You will meet with your
Fitness Guide up to four times during the week to fine-tune your
schedule and develop your Take-Home Program so that you may meet
your goals, not only this week, but throughout the year. For eleven
summer weeks the Golden Door offers Special Focus Weeks along with
our regular program.
